Learning and Unlearning Together centers reciprocal and community-engaged learning about Puerto Rico, Puerto Ricans, and Puerto Ricanness. This spoke seeks to bridge the gap between the university and communities through cultural activities. It also encourages dialogue through a Study Abroad program in Puerto Rico with undergraduate students from UW-Madison.

ABOUT THE SPOKE

Learning and Unlearning Together aspires to build bridges between Puerto Rican communities in the Midwest and the archipelago as well as center cultural production through public events that ignite critical engagements, inviting students and broader publics to question inherited assumptions and understand Puerto Rican life as diasporic, fluid, and transnational. This spoke builds its goal through two main initiatives, The Luisa Capetillo Cultural Series and the Study Abroad Program.

THE LUISA CAPETILLO CULTURAL SERIES

The Luisa Capetillo Cultural Series extends the HUB’s work through public and community facing programs in literature, music, film, food, performance, and conversation to attract people outside of our academic networks to join the conversation while also celebrating our cultures on a local, national, and transnational level. Some events will include film screenings, musical events, culinary festivals, and public lectures. 

STUDY AWAY IN PUERTO RICO

The study-away program connects students with artists, scholars, cultural workers, and community organizations in Puerto Rico to explore the diasporic, fluid, and transnational nature of Puerto Ricanness and the ways that Puerto Ricans have built their communities in the diaspora and the archipelago. This program consists of a two-week trip to Puerto Rico in the summer where students will learn various community-based research methods and ethical approaches to research while also learning from artists, academics, and cultural producers in the archipelago, and critically engage with diverse forms of knowledge production.
